Medardo Mairena reunited with his seven-year-old daughter after 17 months of forced separation

Medardo Mairena was reunited with his children after 18 months without seeing them

The peasant leader and political prisoner Medardo Mairena was able to meet his children on two visits on December 24 and 31, 2022, his family reported. Mairena had not seen or had any communication with his children for 18 months, a right that the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has denied to political prisoners detained in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Chipote».

“Although for the first time after a year and a half after being kidnapped, he was able to see all his children, it makes us very sad that Medardo has to spend these festivities unjustly imprisoned. They were visits full of mixed feelings,” denounced Medardo Mairena’s family on his Facebook social network account.

In addition, they point out that Mairena is always found malnourished due to the scant food they provide him in the cells of the dictatorship; also that he has “physical deficiencies” throughout his confinement and that “he has never been allowed to see an independent medical specialist.”

“We, his relatives (demand) his immediate and unconditional release, since Medardo is innocent and the only thing he has dedicated himself to is fighting for the human and constitutional rights of all Nicaraguans,” claims Medardo Mairena’s family.

“We demand that while he is unjustly and illegally detained, these family visits are made more often, that nutrition improve, and that they allow him to read – a Bible -, and medical attention from a specialist as soon as possible,” he adds.

The family of Medardo Mairena add that the political prisoner sent a message of thanks to the Nicaraguans who pray for him and invited them to “keep their spirits and hope high for this New Year 2023. Let us trust in God, He will hear the cry of His town”.

The hostage of conscience faced on February 9 of last year a judicial process described as “illegal.” On the 18th of the same month, the sentence was handed down. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison. Despite the conviction, his family continues to demand his freedom. The regime has kept him in prison since July 5, 2021.
