This would be the sixth visit that the Nicaraguan regime has authorized for Mairena, who has been imprisoned for the second time by the dictatorship. The peasant leader remains in prison in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua, where he has been held since July 5, 2021.

Mairena’s relatives denounced that the hostage of conscience continues to be the object of interrogations, has little access to the sun and continues to lose weight. “To date our brother has lost a total of 61 pounds,” they stated.

For the second time arrested and sentenced
The Ortega dictatorship, on July 5, 2021, imprisoned Mairena for the second time, who aspired to compete in the presidential elections on November 7, where Daniel Ortega regained power.
Three years ago, in 2019; Ortega’s justice sentenced Mairena to 216 years in prison for alleged acts of terrorism, however he was released on June 11, 2019 through an amnesty approved by the steamroller of Sandinista deputies in the National Assembly.

This time he was tried and sentenced to 13 years in prison for the alleged crimes of “carrying out acts that undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, requesting military interventions, organizing with financing from foreign powers to carry out acts of terrorism and destabilization”, according to Law 1055, Sovereignty Law.
It is unknown if the opposition leader will continue to be imprisoned in “El Nuevo Chipote” or if he will be transferred to a prison. In addition to Medardo, the Ortega regime is holding captive peasant leaders Pedro Mena and Freddy Navas, both sentenced to 10 years in prison.
