Through a statement released on social networks, the relatives of the peasant leader Medardo Mairena reported on the current situation of the political prisoner, who is being held captive in the Directorate for Judicial Assistance in Managua, known as “El Nuevo Chipote.”
The relatives of the presidential candidate detailed that yesterday, August 27, they made the 10th visit in prison in more than 13 months in prison. “It always hurts us a lot to see him in those inhuman conditions in which he finds himself, incommunicado and unjustly deprived of his liberty,” they wrote on their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The hostage of conscience was imprisoned for the second time by the Ortega regime on July 5, 2021. This time they accused him of “treason against the fatherland”, while in 2018, they accused him of being a terrorist.
“It is very outrageous that after more than a year of incarceration, interrogations are still being held regularly. Our brother is very thin, so far he has lost 74 pounds. Medardo greatly regrets the brutal persecution of the Sandinista regime against our Catholic Church. He is praying and fasting for Monsignor. Rolando Alvarez, for all the unjustly imprisoned priests, for all prisoners of conscience and for the freedom and democracy of our beloved Nicaragua,” the family described in the publication.
According to what they said, Mairena remains “steadfast in her conviction to fight and invites us all to keep praying and fasting so that we can witness the miracle and healing that God will do in our nation.”
They denounce abusive revisions to relatives
The relatives of the opponent reiterated the complaint against the abusive checks they must face to be able to see their relatives, visits that are still being monitored. They stressed that the authorities of the Evaristo Vásquez police complex also give less than 24 hours notice of the meeting, which they called “bad habit and inappropriate anticipation.”
“We continue denouncing that at the moment of entering El Chipote, the guards carry out denigrating treatment against the relatives,” they pointed out. Previously, other family members denounced the humiliation to which they were subjected, which included touching, nudity and screaming.
On February 18 of this year, the Nicaraguan justice ruled against Medardo Mairena, sentencing him to 13 years in prison. The hostage of conscience faced on the 9th of the same month, a judicial process described as “illegal” in “El Nuevo Chipote”.
