Relatives of the peasant leader and political prisoner again Medardo Mairena they were able to visit him, for the seventh time, on Friday, April 29, at the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ) known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua.
“More than a month after the last visit, we had the blessing of being able to visit our beloved son and brother, peasant leader Medardo Mairena, in El Nuevo Chipote,” his family communicated through the Twitter account. Medardo Mairena Sequeira.

They reported that during the two-hour hearing, Mairena told them that she is still in a punishment cell, with little air circulation, where it is “unbearably hot.”
They also report that the former presidential candidate is suffering from allergies in his body and with circulation problems. “The mistreatment continues, keeping the light bulb in his cell on day and night, with little access to the sun and the daily interrogations continue,” they denounced.
In interview with Article 66one of his relatives said that Medardo Mairena compares the punishment cell in El Nuevo Chipote” with those in the “infiernillo” in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System, in Tipitapa, where he was confined for more than 10 months between 2018 and 2019.

«In the cell in which Medardo (Mairena) is found, little air enters, he affirms that it is the same when he was in Tipitapa. He knows when it is day or night, only when he looks out of the only small window there is », he described.
Despite the inhuman conditions in which the prisoner of conscience finds himself, his relatives assure that he remains firm in his conviction to fight for justice, freedom and democracy in Nicaragua. “He remains clinging to his faith and trusts that God will soon release all political prisoners,” they stressed.
As for the people of Nicaragua, Mairena sent words of encouragement to continue fighting for the country’s democracy. “Medardo says not to be discouraged, to continue praying for that democratic Nicaragua that we all yearn for. The Lord will listen to his people », affirmed his relatives.
Finally, they denounced that at the time of entering the visit, in addition to the constant photographs, the Ortega Police officers inappropriately handled the relatives. “The women touched their private parts and their breasts, these abuses of authority are not pleasant,” denounced a relative on condition of anonymity.
He does not know if he will be transferred to a prison
The uncertainty continues both for Medardo Mairena and for the other political prisoners, since they do not know if they will be transferred to a Penitentiary System or if they will continue to be held in El Nuevo Chipote.

On February 18, the Nicaraguan justice sentenced Mairena to 13 years in prison, for the alleged crimes of “carrying out acts that undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, requesting military interventions , organize with financing from foreign powers to carry out acts of terrorism and destabilization”, according to Law 1055, Sovereignty Law.
On July 5, 2021, the Police imprisoned for the second time Medardo Mairena, Pedro Mena and Freddy Navas, all members of the Peasant Movement. This time they were tried for alleged “treason against the fatherland.” In 2018, they were accused of being terrorists.
