On World Car Free Day, celebrated this Thursday (22), the Ministry of Regional Development (MDR) gathered in a live (live broadcast) representatives of initiatives awarded by the Selo Bicicleta Brasil. According to the national secretary of Mobility and Regional and Urban Development of the MDR, Sandra Holanda, the seal is a way to highlight actions to encourage this means of transport and reinforce its importance for urban mobility.
“The MDR has as one of its priorities in the public mobility policy the support for non-motorized modes”, highlighted the secretary.
During the broadcast, Sandra Holanda showed a video of the folder made for World Car-Free Day. In the video, data from DataSUS for 2021 indicate that, counting only cars and motorcycles, Brazil has 90 million vehicles that are responsible for 77% of pollution emissions in the environment. According to experts, the high number of the motorized fleet increases the risk of accidents. Last year, there were 64,441 accidents, which left more than 5,000 dead and 71,000 injured.
By encouraging the use of bicycles as a means of transport, especially in large and medium-sized cities, six initiatives have already received the Brazil Bicycle Seal. In addition to seeking to encourage the development of cycle infrastructure projects and the allocation of resources to initiatives to support transport by bicycle and to encourage the implementation of cycle paths, cycle lanes and shared lanes, the seal recognizes good practices developed for the implementation of infrastructures. and equipment to encourage the use of bicycles in Brazilian urban areas.
“The commendation can be received by state and municipal bodies and entities that are part of the areas of urban development, transit and urban mobility; non-governmental organizations with activities related to the use of bicycles as a means of transport and leisure; companies in the productive sector; and private sector companies in the bicycle production and maintenance chain”, highlighted the MDR.
Those interested in obtaining the Brazil Bicycle Seal must send the recognition request to the Ministry of Regional Development. The certification is valid annually and can be renewed upon a new evaluation. “The contemplated initiatives, companies and institutions may, during the period of validity of the recognition, have their name published in the site of the MDR and in other means of communication and advertising, or even on occasions when the seal is highlighted, and use it in their products and in means of communication, advertising and the like”, highlighted the folder.
