The mayor of Quilmes, Mayra Mendoza, assured that there is “advance regarding the political violence that is experienced” in the Latin American region and pointed out that the assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner puts our democracy in “a serious situation ” that remains “conditioned”, within the framework of the 27th Mercocities Summit.
“On September 1 in Argentina there was an attempted magnifemicide, an assassination attempt on our vice president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who was president twice,” Mendoza said during his vOfficial two-day visit to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, where he participates in the 27th Summit of Mercocities that takes place in the city of Montevideo.
In this sense, he affirmed that the attempted assassination is “a serious situation for our democracy, which is conditioned by situations like this, from the fact that the powers that be do not take the independent place that they have to take.”
“Many times they are part of a collusion to persecute and harass popular leaders as in Argentina today is part of the Judiciary, which functions as a judicial party. What it cannot do democratically, elected by the will of the people, they do it from the Judiciary,” he asserted.
“There are situations that we cannot ignore or fail to mention in these meetings, which have to do with moments that are lived in my country particularly, but also in the region, with the hate speech, with progress regarding the political violence that exists in our countries. But in Argentina, particularly, it has reached a limit. So we all have to be able to take reflection and make our contributions in this regard”he remarked.
In this regard, he mentioned “thematic gender unit”in which “we have built and have worked in this time: a transversing guide, a transversing guide for all thematic units regarding the genre in particular”.
The Summit is registered under the slogan of advancing towards “Friendly cities, greener cities”, from three main axes: environmentally sustainable city, innovative city and city of care.
in the meeting, Quilmes revalidated its participation in different spaces of the network and was recognized as one of the three winning cities of the 2022 South-South Cooperation Fund.
“It is really very important for us to be able to participate in this Network, I appreciate the possibility. We are also a municipality on the banks of the Río de la Plata, Quilmes has 700,000 inhabitants in the Buenos Aires suburbs, and we have been part of Mercociudades since the year 2000,” assured the mayor.
In this regard, he added: “We intend to continue strengthening this Network to be able to address problems that, I understand, are common and from the strength of local governments, we have to be able to coordinate and propose intelligent, creative, disruptive possibilities, to address solutions for those topics”.
