SANTO DOMINGO.- The Mayor’s Office of Santo Domingo Oeste carried out an extensive operation to recover streets and sidewalks from the avenues of Prolongación 27 de Febrero, Los Beisbolistas to Autopista Duarte, also on Carretera Duarte Vieja with Isabel A. Guiar.
The day was headed by the General Director of Security of the Mayor’s Office Pedro Valdez, the director of Public Space José Lluveres, the director of the Municipal Police Sergio Victoria and inspectors from the Department of Urban Cleanliness, of the building institution.
Mayor José Andújar explained that the work was carried out after the deadlines for notification to the owners of scrap metal and merchandise, which hinder the free movement of pedestrians and motor vehicles, were met. He indicated that according to municipal ordinances, fines to citizens for occupying public spaces irregularly are applied based on the footage they have used.
“The sidewalks of the aforementioned avenues were occupied with points of repair and sale of tires, plumbing items, greengrocers, fried foods, among other types of informal sales, which hindered the passage of the citizens,” he explained.
Several makeshift dumps and mosquito breeding sites were also eliminated in the operation. These actions were carried out respecting the rights of the people and their merchandise was not seized, they only removed the tables, tarantines, supermarket carts, wooden crates and any object that prevented the passage of the pedestrian.
The Mayor’s Office of Santo Domingo Oeste had warned the street vendors who had taken over the public spaces to abandon them, because they violated the current municipal regulations, which sanction these practices.
Citizens consulted welcomed the decision of local authorities to recover public spaces because in some places they had to throw themselves into the streets to reach their destinations.
The Mayor’s Office of Santo Domingo Oeste reported that these operations are carried out constantly in the municipality, as a way of guaranteeing the enjoyment of free access to public spaces by citizens.
