Mayor's Office denies increase in collection for charamicos

The Mayor of the National District clarified that the collection of RD$1,000.00 to the vendors of charamicos from the Avenue Winston Churchill for the use of sidewalks is the same since 2018 and that only RD$250.00 was charged last year due to the economic situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elizabeth Mateo, communication director of the Mayor’s Office, reported that until 2018 everyone paid RD$1,000.00 per square meter, in 2020 a concession was made and nothing was charged.

“In 2021 they were charged RD$250.00 per meter and they provided the measures, such as a concession for the post-Covid recovery year…in 2022 the usual charge of RD$1,000.00 was returned, but not per square meter but per linear meter, in favor of the charamiquerosMatthew said.

He indicated that now they were given the facility of the linear meter because before it was a square meter and for them it is better because they pay the same value of RD$1,000.00

“They place the merchandise linearly, each square meter would have to buy more to be able to place it linearly as they do, that’s why the linear meter works out better for them,” he said.

Mateo reported that the vendors went to the Mayor’s Office, met with those in charge and agreed to return to the rate and that they are also allowed to make the payment after their sales, granting them a term until December 23.

Some vendors admitted that they continue to pay RD$1,000.00 with the difference that before they were charged RD$500.00 per meter in the front part of the sidewalks and another RD$500.00 in the back because they have to leave an aisle so that the articles do not affect passers-by. .

For this Friday, several traders will call a press conference to explain their situation in more detail.
