Mayors of Cundinamarca warn of impacts and ask for agreement on the new peak and plate on Saturdays.
The announcement of the peak and plate on Saturdays in Bogotá generated concern among mayors of Cundinamarca, who ask for exemptions and greater coordination, alleging effects on mobility and the inhabitants who depend on the capital.
The decision of the mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, to implement peak and license plate on Saturdays for vehicles registered outside the capitalgenerated a wave of reactions among municipal leaders of Cundinamarca.
The measure, which will come into force in January 2026 —as reported by the Mayor’s Office—, seeks to reduce traffic congestion on weekends and improve mobility conditions in the main entrance corridors to Bogotá.
The announcement, however, raised concern in several mayors of municipalities that depend on these roads for their daily connection with the city.
Choachí expresses direct effects due to the restriction
In conversation with La FM, the mayor of ChoachíÁlvaro Pulido Rodríguezwarned that the measure significantly impacts the municipalities in the east of the department
“The regional peak and plate to us in Choachí, and not only to Choachí but to the Oriente Province […] It affects us too much because the entrance to Bogotá is through Monserrate and Guadalupe. It is a road that has never really generated traffic jams,” he said.
Pulido insisted that the mobility particularities of the east were not taken into account and that the movements of workers and merchants could be seriously limited.

Medina asks for exemptions for the periphery of Cundinamarca
From Medina, the mayor Leopoldo Rigaud Peña López expressed concern about the increase in the cost to request circulation permits and requested that differential treatment be considered for remote municipalities:
“With the issue of increasing fifty percent in case of requesting exemption for peak and plate, I think it should be applied directly to the entire peripheral part, and also to us who come from the area further outside of Cundinamarca,” he said.
The president pointed out that many inhabitants of these territories travel to Bogotá for medical, work or educational reasons, and that the increase in costs would represent a considerable economic impact.

Chía calls for regional coherence and to rethink the measure
One of the most political statements was made by the mayor of Chía, Leonardo Donoso Ruizwho asked that Bogotá and Cundinamarca act with alignment and dialogue:
“From the Mayor’s Office of Chía we call for coherence, for the regional positions between Cundinamarca and Bogotá to be consistent and coherent with the decisions that the mayor of Bogotá is making. With respect and without any intention of polarization in the region, we call for him to reconsider his decision.”
Donoso stressed that mobility measures must be built in an articulated manner, given the high level of functional integration between Bogotá and the municipalities of the Sabana.
Although the Bogotá Mayor’s Office maintains that the measure seeks to improve vehicular circulation and reduce travel times during weekends, Local leaders insist that the restrictions must take into account the mobility dynamics of the municipalities that depend on the capital. From the municipal mayors’ offices, it is expected that the Government of Cundinamarca will dialogue with the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá to specify the scope of the measure and avoid greater effects on the surrounding municipalities.
