The United States Department of Homeland Security estimates that, when the restrictions of the Title 42up to 18,000 migrants a day will arrive at the southern border, an increase of more than 250% compared to the 7,000 irregulars a day that are currently detained.
In a interview with CNN this Sundaythe head of that instance, Alejandro Mayorkas, born in Cuba, avoided confirming that official figure, but assured that they are prepared to face “different scenarios.”
If that number is reached, he said, “it will be an extraordinary strain on our system,” so they are anticipating solutions “not only at the national level, but also with our southern partnersWithout mentioning what those solutions are, Mayorkas asserted that what they are planning requires “an original approach to what is an unprecedented challenge.”
The secretary recalled that Title 42, enacted in 2020 at the request of then President Donald Trump and which has allowed the automatic deportation of around a million migrants, is a health measure -issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Diseases (CDC) to prevent the spread of covid – and that, now that the pandemic is coming to an end, it cannot last forever.
Without mentioning what those solutions are, Mayorkas asserted that what they are planning requires “an original approach to what is an unprecedented challenge.”
In early April, the CDC announced the end of Title 42, which continued during the presidency of Joe Biden, for May 23, which has provoked criticism among both Republicans and Democrats.
Several judges have announced that they will block the plan to end the measure, which may stop its removal, at least temporarily.
Asked by CNN what would you say to someone who “is watching this from another country and is considering coming,” Mayorkas was blunt: “Don’t come.”
The current migration crisis is reaching figures never seen before. Also this Sunday, the Panamanian Government announced that, so far this year, they have passed through its territory about 19,000 migrants after crossing the dangerous jungle of Darien. Most of them are Venezuelans, followed by Haitians and Cubans.
the island lives the last of their unstoppable exoduses since, last November, the Government of Díaz-Canel agreed with that of Daniel Ortega the “free visa” for Cubans who travel to Nicaragua.
Some calculations estimate that, by the end of next September, around 150,000 Cubans will have entered the United States in a single year, more than the 125,000 who entered this territory by sea during the Mariel boatlift between April and October 1980.
