Mayor of Talara against privatization of Petroperú: "It is not a viable solution"

Petroperú

The provincial mayor of Talara, Sigifredo Zárate Vite, expressed his concern and rejection of the idea of privatizing Petroperu and supported the statement that the municipality sent to President Dina Boluarte.

In the statement, the official considered that the measure to privatize the hydrocarbon company would not have good results.

“We have witnessed first-hand the privatization of oil fields and unfortunately it has not had very good results. In our area, privatization took a production of almost 140,000 barrels that has now fallen to less than 30,000. And that is because there is no real commitment… we should save the critical situation that Petroperú is in, but from our point of view it is not a viable solution.”he said on the RPP program ‘Economy for All’.

Although he acknowledged the crisis at the state-owned company, he said that if it were sold, its value would be lower than its real value and Peruvians would end up assuming the difference.

“I think it is not convenient, even more so if that image is given to the foreign market. I understand that it is much more damaging not only in the oil sector, but also in the economic sector.”he added.

The mayor of Talara expressed his support for a restructuring of the company. “I agree that there should be a restructuring of the staff because there are many gilded payrolls, although it does not represent a significant percentage of all Petroperú’s investment. I understand that it is between 6 and 8% of the payroll issue, but there are situations that have to be reviewed. No one has mentioned why the refinery (of Talara) went from 2 billion to more than 8 billion soles. I think that there should be an exhaustive investigation and determine the guilty parties.”

CONFIEP SPEAKS OUT

In light of the crisis facing Petroperú, Confiep called on the Executive to make firm decisions to resolve the oil company’s problems.

“We believe that in light of the politicization of Petroperú’s management, the company must undergo a financial restructuring with the support of the best advisors available on the market,” the statement said.

This restructuring will allow for serious negotiations with creditors and facilitate the capitalization of the company.

The union also pointed out that it is necessary to have “a firm political decision and an adequate institutional framework” for this reform to be successful. In this way, it indicated that all Peruvians benefit and not just a few.

On the other hand, he supported the board of directors of Petroperú and described it as “professional and competent” in responsibly addressing the critical and unsustainable situation of the company.
