The mayor of Rocha, Alejo Umpierrez, recognized this Sunday The Observer which has 13 tickets for speeding in three departments, as reported this Saturday by the weekly Chronicles of the East.

The infractions correspond to the last two years, including one from August 2020. “I acknowledge that violations exist. That is the product of a measure that we take as a political decision, which is not to use official records of the leaders; we use our private cars. This meant a 20% saving for the administration. There are no cars strolling on weekends. There are no cars in the houses of the directors and it has been a way of taking care of citizen money”, he explained to El Observador.

Umpiérrez, who learned of his debt last Thursday, pointed out that in November – the last time he paid his patent fee – the sanctions were not included. In turn, he clarified that he will pay them and that he feels upset because “they all fell at once.”

“Yor in November I paid the patent fee and had no fine. Now I see fines from August 2020, before I have assumed. I do not understand why they did not jump at the respective times to the expiration of the previous installments, “he said.

It was also downloaded on Facebook: “Let the one who has never had a fine cast the first stone. It’s incredible that this can be ‘news’.”

The mayor explained that the infractions are due to speeding and that some of them respond to tolls in which “it is prohibited to walk at more than 20 or 30 (kilometers per hour)”.

On a personal note, he believes that instead of the fines, the measure taken by the Rochense commune should be highlighted by prohibiting its directors from using official vehicles: “The great news should be that there is a municipal government in which its leaders do not use a car. official, not that a mayor has fines for speeding, that he has them and is going to pay them”.

“We save fuel thanks to this measure because no director of the administration uses an official car. It can serve as an example that I use my truck, I spend $ 40,000 on gasoline and, instead of paying the mayor, I pay it out of my pocket, “he insisted.

Umpiérrez maintained that he preferred not to “publicize” the decision. On the other hand, he acknowledged his discomfort at the relevance his case took. This is how he expressed it: “I recognize the mistake, but it also seems exaggerated to be in the pillory for having traffic tickets that any citizen has.”
