The mobilizations of the guild ended. The Ministry of Mobility announced agreements such as intensifying controls on those who work irregularly.
From March 20, 2022, the guild of taxi drivers started sit-ins and demonstrations to demand the Municipality of Quito that controls the operation of vehicles that work with mobile platforms and the exemption for the sector of the measure of the ‘Peak and plate’.
After a meeting with the Mayor Santiago Guarderas and the Secretary of Mobility, Ricardo Pozo, the taxi drivers announced that the protests are ending, since it was agreements. For example, it was announced that the Municipality is analyzing exempting them from the measure of ‘Peak and Plate‘ which, according to Carlos Brunis, leader of the sector, represents a day without work.
For her part, Silvana Vallejo, director of the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT), pointed out that there is no precise number of how many taxis are informal. However, it was detailed that the controls for those who work through mobile platforms.
The Secretary of Mobility stressed that they will prepare a report on the feasibility of lifting the ‘Peak and Plate‘, because in recent days he detailed that it is not possible to exempt taxis from the restriction, since traffic in the city is high by itself and with that exoneration would increase 30,000 vehicles in the streets of the city.
Brunis explained that a report must be issued until March 31 so that the ordinance that regulates the ‘Peak and Plate’ be modified with the exemption for taxi drivers. (AVV)
