The mayor of the Lagunillas municipality (Zulia state), Jose “Cheo” Mosquerawas released from prison on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 6, after being detained for five days in Caracas for alleged messages against ruler Nicolás Maduro.
Mosquera was summoned to testify on July 31 at the headquarters of PoliLagunillas for messages spread on social networks, which were attributed to him and denounced as false, where there was talk of the “Chavez plague” and the “Maduro dictatorship.” The mayor was arrested and transferred to the city of Caracas.
It is not known where he was detained, although the transfer was carried out by officials of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM), or if he was presented in court. According to journalist Jhorman Cruz, Mayor Mosquera was received by relatives, his lawyers and several political leaders of Un Nuevo Tiempo such as Nora Bracho.
Since July 29, protests against the presidential election results have left more than two thousand people arrested, 20 dead, according to independent NGOs, and hundreds of complaints of persecution.
President Nicolás Maduro said there are 2,229 people detained throughout the country, whom he called “terrorists.” Meanwhile, the NGO Foro Penal has identified 1,102 people detained since July 29, of whom 100 are teenagers and five belong to an indigenous ethnic group.
The largest number of arrests have been recorded in the states of Carabobo, Distrito Capital, Anzoátegui, Miranda and Zulia.
The CNE offered a second and final report in which it confirmed the victory of the ruler Nicolás Maduro with 51.95% of the votes, while Edmundo González Urrutia obtained 43.18% of the votes.
However, the electoral body has still not published the minutes proving the results, a request that has been reiterated by the opposition, two other presidential candidates and part of the international community.
