Mayor of El Carmen de Viboral confirms that Don Julio, the oldest man in Colombia, died of a heart attack

Don Julio died at the age of 112 in the local hospital.

This is Don Julio Saldarriaga Hernández, an older adult who won the affection of all the inhabitants of El Carmen de Viboral due to their longevity and ability to enjoy social life.

Saldarriaga was born on July 30, 1913 in Cocorná, eastern Antioquia, and He died in the El Carmen de Viboral hospital with his family.

According to the local mayor, Hugo Jiménez Cuervo, Don Julio died at 1:40 in the afternoon of a fulminant heart attack at the local San Juan de Dios Hospital. “He was calm, the hospital was reviewing the possibility of giving him oxygen, but apparently he became unwell,” said the local leader.

Likewise, through social networks, the local president offered his condolences, “Today we come together with deep respect and sadness to say goodbye to an extraordinary human being, who, at 112 years of life, was recognized as the oldest person in Colombia. His long existence He was a testimony of wisdom, strength and an invaluable story that enriched his family and his entire community.”, assured Jiménez Cuervo.

Don Julio Saldarriaga was considered the oldest person alive in Colombia and one of two living supercentenarians in the country (who are over 110 years old). According to The Gerontology Research Group (GRG), there are only records of 49 people on the entire planet who are older than Don Julio.

Don Julio gave an interview on September 22 to Diario el Colombiano, where he indicated that one of the secrets of his longevity was company and tireless care at the home of his daughter Ubiter, and the time and dedication of his granddaughters; in addition to their endless breaks to go in to drink rum and listen to La Martina by Antonio Aguilar at your favorite bar, or greet so many friends or strangers who simply want to shake your hand or hug you.

Don Julio dedicated himself to work in the fields and to the artisanal production of liquor. He formed an extended family that today includes six generations.
