Machu Picchu was chosen for the third consecutive year as “World’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2022”, of the global edition of the World Travel Awards. In this regard, the provincial mayor of Cusco, Víctor Boluarte Medina, considered that this distinction is not only for the region, but also for Peru and that it also benefits all sectors, especially tourism.
Speaking to Andina, he stressed that the Inca citadel has an “energetic, almost esoteric, mysterious component, which is rarely found mixed in the natural cultural attractions that exist in the world.” He said that this particularity – unlike other international tourist attractions – continues to stand out and achieve more distinctions.
In this sense, Boluarte indicated that Cusco as a region can make the economic activity of tourism in the country have a greater significance. “Of course use Machu Picchu to promote and articulate other tourist attractions that can make us not only integrate more balanced as a country, but also offer a comprehensive package worldwide”, held.
He argued that, for example, this package should be made up of the beaches in the north of the country, the Amazon, the highlands and some other regions such as Arequipa and Ayacucho.

On the other hand, Boluarte Molina said that, although tourism is reactivating, there are still some difficulties and challenges that must be faced. He explained that the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) seriously affected the region and that they have started various activities to recover, such as the launch of Inti Raymi in the United States, among others.
However, he pointed out that there are also situations that affect the arrival of a greater number of visitors. Therefore, the burgomaster of Cusco expressed that for this, greater management is required on the part of the Ministry of Culture to carry out the Site Museum, improve the entrance and exit income of the circuit.
