The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman, showed gradual clinical improvement with the withdrawal of medications necessary to maintain blood pressure, says a medical bulletin from the Mater Dei Contorno Hospital signed by doctor Enaldo Melo de Lima. Noman remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was hospitalized on the 3rd with acute respiratory failure.
According to the hospital, the mayor continues to undergo motor and respiratory physiotherapeutic rehabilitation, with improvement in some of his voluntary movements. He was vice-mayor elected in 2020 and took over management of the capital of Minas Gerais in March 2022 after the resignation of then-mayor Alexandre Kalil, who decided at the time to run for state government. Last year, Fuad was re-elected after beating state deputy and candidate Bruno Engler (PL) in the second round. He obtained 53.73% of the valid votes.
Health problems have accompanied Fuad Noman since the middle of last year. In July, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the lymphatic system. Even undergoing treatment to combat the disease, he stated from the outset that he would maintain his candidacy for re-election.
In October, Fuad stated that he had completed the treatment and that the cancer had been in complete remission. The new hospitalization, however, is the fourth recorded since November. The previous three were caused, respectively, by pain in the legs, pneumonia and diarrhea and dehydration.
His inauguration as re-elected mayor took place virtually on January 1st, due to medical recommendations. In his video appearance, he spoke with difficulty.
