The mayor of Girardot, Salomón Said Arias, uncovered a serious irregularity in the delivery of medications by the Mercazsalud operator, hired by the EPS Famisanar. During a surprise visit, the president discovered the closed establishment and with a large number of drugs accumulated inside, despite the constant complaints of users who claim not to receive their treatments for months.

The operation was carried out after multiple complaints from citizens, especially patients with chronic and high -cost diseases, who claimed that medications were unjustifiably retained. The images of the inspection, disseminated in social networks, show the mayor visibly outraged by verifying that hundreds of medication boxes remained stored without being delivered.
“We are not talking about simple delays, but of human lives,” said Arias, who demanded that the national authorities already the Superintendence of Health take immediate measures. In a blunt tone, the president said that this type of negligence “does more damage than the sicariate”, referring to the impact it has on people who depend on their treatments to survive.
The complaint generated a citizen support wave and turned on the debate on the management of health system resources. Many Girardot inhabitants supported the mayor’s action and asked that surveillance over the EPS be maintained that, “play with people’s health while receiving public money.”
Before media and social pressure, Famisanar officially announced the termination of the contract with MercazSalud from November 15pointing out that the service will be assumed by another operator. The EPS recognized delivery failures and promised to guarantee a transition without affecting patients.
The case of Girardot has become a symbol of the citizen claim against the deficiencies of the health system in Colombia. For Mayor Arias, what happened cannot be unpunished and should serve as an example that corruption and negligence in medical care will not be tolerated in their administration.
