The mayor of Santa Cruz, Jhonny Fernández, visited the tire depot of the former Normandy municipal landfill, where a fire was registered since the early hours of this Monday, July 4. On the spot, the burgomaster He indicated that the fire units continue to work to mitigate the fire; however, he assured that the situation is under control and that the Mayor’s office staff will stay for several days monitoring the area to avoid another disaster.
“According to reports, the situation is under control, thank God there was a quick reaction from the rescuers and firefighters.we are going to continue monitoring the area”, reported the mayor.
He indicated that five people were evacuated to different health centers affected by the toxic air -product of burning tires-, who fortunately are out of danger.
He affirmed that the Mayor’s Office is taking care of all the medical expenses and indicated that health brigades to give first aid residents of neighboring neighborhoods who present respiratory complications.
Also, he said that Police continue to investigate on site to determine the cause of the accident. It was forceful in ensuring that, if it is verified that the fire was intentional or provoked, proceedings will be initiated against those responsible

He announced that in the coming weeks he will announce a project to give a new treatment to the tires deposited in said place. It is a public-private partnership to multiply efforts in the grinding and transformation of rubber into raw material for marketing.
