The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (photo), and the vice-mayor, Eduardo Cavaleire, received diplomas, this Wednesday (18), together with the 51 councilors elected or re-elected for the next legislature. The ceremony, at Palácio Pedro Ernesto, was led by the president of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ), Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueira, who highlighted that the moment is one of happiness for those elected, but also of great responsibility.
“You have to take care of our population, our people. This work is difficult, but the pleasure of performing the role will certainly lead you to good paths and good practices, always seeking harmony between the powers”, declared the president of TRE-RJ.
The diplomaization is carried out after all deadlines for processing elections and questioning the results have passed. It certifies that the candidate is capable of taking on the role. The next step is the inauguration ceremony, scheduled for January 1st, when the mandates that end in December 2028 begin.
Fourth term
The graduates did not make speeches, but, on his social networks, Eduardo Paes celebrated the official results of the polls, which granted him his fourth term as head of the Rio de Janeiro Executive.
“The feeling is the same as I had there in 2008: the same emotion, the same joy, the same butterflies in my stomach and the same desire to get up early every day to fight for a better Rio. Many thanks to the people of Rio for the opportunity to to be mayor of the most incredible of all cities!”, said Paes.
He was re-elected in the first round with more than 1 million and 80 thousand votes, which corresponds to 60.47% of the valid total. The City Council will have 21 new councilors. Of the total of 51 elected or re-elected, 12 are women and 16 are black or mixed race.
