Betssy Chávezformer head of the Cabinet and right hand of Pedro Castillo, wrote a testamentary letter in which he announced the restart of a hunger strike and pointed out that he was a victim of “harassment, abuse and torture” by the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE). Hours later, the institution denied these accusations through a statement.
The former minister sent a dramatic letter in which she even asked for the blessing of a priest and a video call to say goodbye to her parents. He also requested that his remains be delivered to the lawyer Raúl Noblecilla and transferred to his native Tacna.
He accused that INPE prevents its displacement to the bathroom and that it is a victim of constant adjustments and threats. Next, the document written by Chávez, who is imprisoned in the Chorrillos prison:
I, Betssy Betzabet Chávez Chino registered in public records through a notarial letter of absolute powers.

His judicial proceedings as he had been doing, due to constant harassment, abuse and torture that have not only ceased but worsen day by day, even preventing my displacement from hygienic services, making me constant adjustment, death threats, not allowing me to meet with my technical defense as ordered by the regulation of the Criminal Execution Code; My exhaustion was translated into a measure of strength of a hunger strike of about fifteen (15) days, believing that the inpe would cease harassment and reprisals, fulfilling the immediate removal of director Nelly Aquino Aquino Guardales, his boss Ott Vilma Paucar and his head of security Elvia Córdova Mondragón; However, the slogan is to prevent me from defending myself in an oral trial and what is sought is that I attend only as an ornament, since they send me doping to judicial proceedings with fluoxitin and/or alprazolam, therefore in such circumstances it is decision.
First: resume and radicalize my measure of force to a dry hunger strike, I must not allow medical review or resuscitation in any hospital, because it makes no sense that moisturizes me and the abuses of the INPE continue, that is my will.

Inpe says that Chávez raised his hunger strike
“The internal Betssy Chávez Chino, held in the Penitentiary Establishment Annex Women Chorrillos, is found with stable vital signs according to the medical report made today, August 20 of the present,” said the INPE.
He added that “the internal has raised her absolute hunger strike. Also, at approximately 11:30 am she decided to eat food.”

Finally, the institution explained that “it will continue to act according to regular procedures in their health care.”
