“Those who reported will also have to explain if they have information that there was an agreement with organized crime. It is not that nothing had happened in Tabasco, it is not that there was no kidnapping, there was no extortion, it was an open secret that there was a charge of the floor fee, which was charged to the inns, to the merchants,” May said during the press conference.
“Everyone knows, here it was popular who commanded ‘The Sweeper’, or do we not know?” May questioned. “Hernán Bermúdez,” responded one of the attendees at the event. “Yes, right?” the president accepted.
”It seems that we have amnesia of what happened, I have been on the job for just a month and a half, and we have already seen how they are shaping up, how they are changing their line of communication, now the red note is the most important, the most preponderant of some media, and before they didn’t highlight anything,” said the president who protested on September 30.
“Not us, nor are they going to look for us because they already know that we are not going to agree. With us there is no relationship, no meeting with this type of cartels or organizations,” he explained.
January of this year, after episodes of violence in Tabasco, Hernán Bermúdez Requena resigned from the Secretariat of Public Security of the entity governed at that time by Carlos Merino.
The secretary’s departure occurred after the assaults that occurred in Villahermosa on the afternoon of January 4 and the shootings, car fires and road blockades that occurred in December 2023.
After Bermúdez’s resignation, the then commissioner of the State Police José del Carmen Castillo remained in charge of the SSP office.
Hernán Bermúdez Requena was appointed as Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tabasco in December 2019 by the then governor Adán Augusto López.
In January 2024, the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the acts of violence that occurred in Tabasco as propaganda.
Adán Augusto López Hernández governed Tabasco between January 1, 2019 and August 26, 2021. He then joined López Obrador’s Cabinet.
