“I tried everything to pass Max and we were very close to winning today. We have to take the positive and try to do it in the next one,” said Sainz, who was coming off a frustrating third DNF of the season last week in Baku.

“They were very strong in the race,” Verstappen acknowledged his rival. “I think he would have preferred to attack rather than defend (first position), but luckily everything worked out.”

The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine), who started from second position, soon saw his dreams of achieving his first victory since 2013 cut short and finished in seventh place at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.
