Twelve people died this Saturday in a bar in the Irapuato municipality, located 50 kilometers from the capital of the Mexican state of Guanajuato, which has become one of the main sources of violence in the Aztec country during the last four years.
Witnesses to the massacre claimed that several attackers entered a bar called El Texano shortly after eight at night and opened fire on customers and shop assistants, located in the neighborhood of December 12, on the outskirts of the city.
The first police report reported that six men and five women died in the bar, also known as El Pantano, while three other victims were transferred to hospitals in Civil Protection ambulances.
After the incident, elements of the municipal Police, the State Public Security Forces and the National Guard went to the business in order to protect the crime scene.
The central state of Guanajuato, previously a quiet and prosperous territory, has become one of the most violent in Mexico, to the point of registering the highest number of intentional homicides in the country since 2018.
According to local Mexican authorities, nine out of 10 murders have some kind of connection to the dispute between organized crime groups for control of the territory. According to the Spanish newspaper The countrythe fights between the groups of Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación have caused massacres, attacks and large police operations to find their leaders.
The main illicit activities that are concentrated in the state located in the Mexican lowlands are the theft and transfer of hydrocarbons, as well as drug dealing.
In particular, the town of Irapuato has experienced tense episodes in recent months. In July, for example, a remote-controlled bomb was activated taking advantage of the presence of several police officers, in what was a further step in the escalation of terror. In this act, two officers were injured.
Just two weeks ago, another event shook the Mexican population, when 10 people were killed, and others were injured, on September 21, in a pool located in the municipality of Tarimoro, in the same state of Guanajuato.
According to the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection of the Government of Mexico, despite the downward trend in intentional homicides in Guanajuato, it remains the state with the highest incidence in the country, with 2,115 victims between January and August of this year, which represents 10.2% of the total number of victims of this crime throughout the country in the same period.
