Some residents of Masaya have declared themselves dissatisfied with a monument that the commune installed in the central park in memory of five heroes of the Sandinista revolution. “Politics is one thing and recreation is another, money was spent on that,” complained a citizen of this municipality who was visiting the place on Tuesday.
This park is one of the most visited places by local families, tourists from other departments and foreigners who come to the so-called “city of flowers”. The monument was located on the southwest side of the park and there are five statues that represent General Augusto C. Sandino, Carlos Fonseca Amador, Tomás Borge, Camilo Ortega and Hilario Sánchez.
In addition to the statues, the commune placed banners everywhere, mostly red and black. For some citizens, politics should not mix with recreation. “The monument is for squares, not for parks, because it is something merely political,” opined an independent architect. He also mentioned that there was “a legendary tree” in the place, for which he regretted something that was “harmonious with nature” was replaced.
“Dwarf” statues
“From a professional point of view, the statues are on a disproportionate scale, it is not on a natural scale,” criticizes a local artist.
He also mentioned that the work is not geometrically harmonious, so the figures appear to be men of shorter than average height. “They look like short people, they should have taken care of that,” he said.

A few meters from the monument there is also a bust of General Augusto C. Sandino and another of Carlos Ulloa Aráuz, a pilot from Masaya who died defending the Cuban revolution in 1961. In the area, there is also a plaque in memory of combatants killed in that city on October 17, 1977.

The central park of Masaya was built at the end of the 19th century according to consulted files. Criticism also points out that the park concept should not be lost with the improvements to the site. For example, it is recalled that, in recent years, the two-meter-high shield of Nicaragua disappeared, with natural volcanoes composed of earth and green grass. The national symbol was located on the left side of the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
Currently, the remodeling project, according to information from official media, has an investment of 8 million córdobas, the first stage has already been inaugurated and includes the construction of a pedestrian walkway, improvements in the Neptune fountain and in the old kiosk that was known as a temple of music bordered by 8 swans, two of which are new. “Weird because its tail looks like a penguin and not a swan,” commented a citizen.
The project also includes the expansion of the playing area, expansion of the lighting system, among other works. Regarding the monument of the five heroes, it was known that it was made by a sculptor from Managua.
