The former president Martin Vizcarra Cornejo He was transferred back to the Barbadillo prison, in the district of Ate (Lima), after receiving a medical discharge after undergoing kidney surgery, official sources reported and local media confirmed.
Vizcarra, who is serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption crimes related to the Lomas de Ilo and Hospital de Moquegua cases, was admitted days ago to a clinic in Jesús María after experiencing intense colic and kidney complications. The surgical procedure sought to stabilize his state of health without the need to remove the organ, although his left kidney has reduced function, according to the medical report.
The transfer from the health center to the prison was carried out under strict protection from the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), with the support of police agents, after specialists determined that he no longer required intensive hospital care.
Upon his departure, Vizcarra was received by supporters of the Peru Primero party, who gathered outside the clinic to express their support before he was taken back to Barbadillo.
The former president, who led the country between 2018 and 2020, has faced various health problems linked to medical complications in recent months, including previous transfers due to decompensation from prison to hospital centers. These episodes add to the complex legal and criminal context that he has faced since his conviction, which included the immediate execution of the sentence after the decision of the Judiciary in November 2025.
The Barbadillo prison, located in Ate and intended for serving sentences of high-ranking officials, is known for housing former presidents and high-profile figures prosecuted for corruption cases. In this center, Vizcarra continues to serve his sentence while receiving medical follow-up and the necessary treatments for his postoperative clinical recovery.
