Martín Vizcarra: President of the JNE warns that disqualified candidates “are not going to pass”

The inclusion of Martín Vizcarra as a candidate for the first vice presidency in the Peru Primero formula, despite having three disqualifications from Congress, was not an issue that was overlooked by the president of the National Election Jury (JNE), Roberto Burneo.

The head of the highest electoral body recalled that his institution has already registered the disqualification of the former president approved in the Plenary Session of the Legislature. Even with that triple sanction in tow, Vizcarra was registered in a presidential plan.

“What we have indicated in this case of the person who is disqualified by Congress (referring to Vizcarra), what the Jury has done is to register that disqualification,” said Burneo, who called on the parties to carefully evaluate their candidacies to prevent them from being crossed out.

“We call on political parties in general to carefully evaluate each of their candidacies so that they do not fail, because eventually if, for example, they are disqualified or have a record of first-instance convictions, when they present it and we qualify, those candidacies will not pass and they will probably no longer have the opportunity to be able to replace them,” warned the head of the JNE.

“This is the moment when all political organizations can filter their candidates so that the jury does not eventually make other decisions,” Burneo recommended, pointing out that only on December 23 will his organization be aware of the official candidacies.

Regarding a possible ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on the precautionary measure presented by Vizcarra seeking to annul his disqualifications, the president of the JNE said that his entity is respectful of the decisions of the institutions.

“We are respectful of all the decisions, including the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, so the jury will only have official knowledge of the candidacies, which is why there are not any on December 23 and then we will begin our work with them,” he emphasized.
