Martín Vizcarra goes to the border area for "defend our sovereignty" (VIDEO)

The former president Martín Vizcarra He is in Loreto, from where he will go to the Chinería Island. As he said, he seeks to “defend our sovereignty” after the threats of former guerrilla Gustavo Petro.

Vizcarra published a video and photos on his Instagram of this trip.

On August 5, 2025, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, generated diplomatic tension by stating that Peru “copied” Santa Rosa island, on the Amazon River, thus ignoring Peruvian sovereignty over that territory.

During an act in Leticia, Petro argued that the creation of the Santa Rosa district by the Peruvian government violates the Rio de Janeiro protocol of 1934 and the spirit of the Treaty of Limits, whose objective – he said – is to guarantee Colombia direct access to the main channel of the Amazon.

In addition, he proposed to reactivate the Permanent Border Inspection Commission to address the issue and warned that, if not reaching an agreement, it could resort to international instances.
