In a conversation with representatives of the logistics sector, the presidential candidate for the Popular Party (PP) Martín Torrijos Espino, affirmed that “I do not come with ties to political parties, nor to deputies and economic groups; I will govern with the best Panamanians ”, and reiterated his commitment to the development of the industry.
During the face-to-face dialogue, representatives of shipping companies, the logistics sector, and students expressed the deficiencies in the industry, among which they mentioned the lack of maritime education (a school ship), lack of digitization of the sector, regulations, as well as inconveniences customs and immigration
In this sense, the former president stated that there has been a lack of a shared vision on the development of the sector, in addition to the fact that bad politics have stolen Panamanian leadership, so the course must be changed.
Torrijos Espino stressed that it is crucial that the customs, maritime, logistics and port sectors participate actively in the construction of an equitable country, and asked them to “join efforts so that the common good prevails over bad politics and particular interests”. .
Likewise, industry experts pointed out that Panama has infrastructure [el Canal de Panamá y puertos] like no other country in the region, “but sometimes we do not fully understand that we have to project it.”
They highlighted that the costs of cargo movement in the country are very high, so they must be lowered to be more efficient and competitive compared to other countries in the area.
Given the above, the political leader pointed out: “we must face the future with determination and let’s make the next few years an opportunity to actively involve youth in key sectors of our country.”
Panama has to become, the ex-president stressed, a connection center [hub logístico] to be much more efficient in services, rebound and take advantage of opportunities.
“We have to create a more equitable country, where students can obtain a scholarship without letters of recommendation from legislators and political influences, as is happening today,” said the presidential candidate.
Torrijos Espino reiterated that “we are going to reactivate the sector generating economic activities and added value and expanding benefits for this area with the generation of wealth and employment.”
