Marketplaces: What types exist and which one is the most suitable to take your business to the Internet?

Currently, They make up 46% of online sales in Peru, according to figures from the Ecommerce Observatory of the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CAPECE). This trend will grow dramatically in the next 5 years, as more and more companies adopt marketplaces as the best platform to promote online sales

“Marketplaces were a key piece in the economic reactivation of the thousands of microentrepreneurs during the health crisis, growing considerably after these two years of pandemic, with new actors joining this successful business model, both of the horizontal type (with products or services offered from different sectors or categories), as vertical (specific to a niche)”, assured Helmut Cáceda, executive president of the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CAPECE).

For this reason, CAPECE shares the types of marketplaces that exist and a list of the 20 main ones that operate in the country so that you can choose the most suitable one for your venture or business.

Marketplaces Pureplayers: The term “Pure Player” refers to companies that are 100% dedicated to online commerce. This means that they do not have a physical store where you can buy their products, but you need an Internet connection and a device to connect. Examples of these are: Mercado Libre, Linio, Juntoz, Diners Club Mall, Atienda, Ibiza Store, OLX, Shopstar, among others.

Marketplaces Retailers: During the pandemic, the capacity of stores and shopping centers was reduced by more than 50%, even reducing the hours of operation, which made it difficult to sell in person, which made many retailers evolve into a mixed modality, also adopting the Marketplace model. Real Plaza, Falabella, Ripley and Plaza Vea are some of them.

Delivery APP: Delivery apps are also found within the ecosystem of marketplaces. Although it is commonly believed that the main sector is restaurants and fast food, delivery apps also work in other areas such as pharmacies and supermarkets. Thus we have Ordenes Ya (who have already opened operations in 21 cities in the interior of the country), Rappi, Cornershop, Wabi and others.

Cross Border Marketplace: If your goal is to take or place your products beyond Peru, then there are various platforms here that have a presence in several countries, such as Ebay, Amazon, Alibaba, Taobao and more.
