SANTO DOMINGO.-“The Dominican Liberation Party will have a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2024 elections, period”, the assertion is from the secretary general of the PLD, Charles Mariotti, when answering questions about versions circulated, the which he called “fables”.
The affirmation of the PLD spokesman was completed with the assertion that it is nonsense to speak of electoral alliances more than two years after the date of the national elections.
“In what head is it possible that they are talking about alliances two years before the elections? Find me a historical political reference on electoral alliances as such in a time so distant from the voting”, Mariotti responded to his interviewers on the Matinal 5 program.
In the conversation, the Secretary General of the PLD reiterated the organization’s position of rejecting the proposal to reform the Constitution of the Republic, considering the moment to be inopportune.
“Total rejection of the proposal to reform the Constitution of the Republic,” he said, also recalling that other sectors of economic and social weight are radically opposed to this modification.
He said that the economic panorama, in which a high level of inflation prevails, a high interest rate from the Federal Reserve of the United States, more expensive loans, geopolitical changes in the world, deglobalization, etc. it is not feasible to promote the modification of the Substantive Law of the Nation.
“In a scenario like this, we must dedicate ourselves to governing, not improvising, behavior that could destroy the democratic quality that we are left with,” commented Charles Mariotti, as detailed by the PLD in a review by its Communications Secretariat.
He warned that what the Government is pursuing by insisting on reforming the Constitution is to eliminate obtaining 50 percent plus one of the votes cast to win in the first round.
Regarding the enactment of the Law that removes import taxes on basic products for feeding the population, placing a zero rate on them, Mariotti said it will be catastrophic for local production and will not be able to lower its prices.
“The total disaster will be the result of that imposition in which, in addition to the political sectors, businessmen and agricultural experts are also opposed, who have established it publicly,” he pointed out, anticipating that this would not generate any effect on the high level of inflation.
PC meeting with applicants
Charles Mariotti explained that at the meeting last April, the Political Committee decided to hold a retreat-type meeting to discuss at length the issues of its internal processes, which includes party reorganization and the Consultation on the sympathy of the members of the Party and citizenship of the presidential candidates of the PLD.
It is the explanation of the reason for the meeting of that body last Tuesday on the outskirts of the capital in a country house in which the progress of the internal processes was reported, highlighting the harmony and unitary spirit among the members of the Political Committee and the candidates for the presidential candidacy.
