Mario Vizcarra: JNE will review the resolution that prevents his candidacy for Perú Primero

The National Election Jury (JNE) will evaluate the appeal presented by the political party Peru First against the resolution that declared the objections formulated with the nomination of Mario Enrique Vizcarra to the Presidency of the Republic on behalf of said group.

This is because the Special Electoral Jury of Lima Centro 1 decided to process the appeal presented the day before by the group, a measure that has already been notified to its legal representative José Luis Alvarado Gonzáles.

The JNE must now call a hearing to review the case. Citizen Edwin Roberto Huamaní Pérez, author of one of the three charges that were opportunely presented against Vizcarra Cornejo, will also be summoned to the same meeting.

At the beginning of the month, the Special Electoral Jury (JEE) of Lima Centro 1 declared Mario Vizcarra’s candidacy inadmissible under the provisions of the Organic Law of Elections, which states that “people who, due to their status as officials and public servants, are sentenced to imprisonment, effective or suspended, with a consented or enforceable sentence, for the commission, as perpetrators, of intentional crimes of collusion, embezzlement or corruption of officials; even if they had been rehabilitated.”

The brother of former president Mario Vizcarra – sentenced to 14 years in prison for the crime of corruption and currently imprisoned in the Barbadillo prison – was sentenced to 3 years of suspended prison in 2005 in Moquegua for the crime of embezzlement.

Due to this and “observing what is expressly provided in the constitutional, legal and regulatory regulations”, the JEE of Lima Centro 1 concluded that the objections were valid and determined that the candidate violated the legal provisions on the requirements of the formula.

Additionally, Peru21 has reported that Mario Vizcarra has an open tax file. A report of Territory Taken points out that in 2020 the Tacna Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation against him for the alleged crime of collusion for the alleged direction of a riverside defense work on the Ilabaya and Locumba rivers, in which officials from the Municipality of Ilabaya would have intervened. All of this in 2018, when Martín Vizcarra was president of the Republic.
