During his visit to Huancayo, the presidential candidate of Peru Primero, Mario Vizcarra, launched harsh criticism against President José Jerí, whom he demanded to leave office immediately for alleged unregistered meetings with a foreign businessman and prosecutors.
Vizcarra questioned the legitimacy of the president and described his behavior as unacceptable for someone who holds the highest office in the country. “You cannot govern by meeting in secret. That is serious and totally reprehensible,” he stated before the press.
The presidential candidate maintained that the meetings of the head of state with the Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang should have been transparent and officially recorded, as required by current regulations. According to him, these events compromise the credibility of the Executive and affect citizen trust.
Likewise, he considered that Congress should have acted more firmly in the face of these revelations. “Due to much less serious situations, presidential vacancies have occurred in the past,” he said, warning that this case could bring new revelations.
Finally, Vizcarra insisted that José Jerí’s permanence in office only deepens the country’s political crisis and reiterated his request for an immediate departure to reestablish institutionality.
