“Those who continue to finance the murderous regime in Cuba, are also complicit in the oppression that this authoritarian regime exercises against their people and against Duannis,” said the congressman.

Madrid, Spain.- Cuban American congressman Mario Díaz-Balart launched a conviction against the Havana regime and demanded the immediate and unconditional liberation of Duannis León Taboada, Young manager of 11j which has been on hunger in the prison of the East Combin, in Havana for 10 days.

In one publication in your social networks, Díaz-Balart described the situation of the political prisoner as “world alert”, stressing that “Duannis is only 27 years old and a life ahead.” The legislator denounced that the young man was unfairly imprisoned for his participation in the popular demonstrations of July 11, 2021 (11J), considered the most massive in Cuba since 1959.

“All those who continue to finance the murderous regime in Cuba, are also accomplices of oppression and brutality that this authoritarian regime exercises against their people and against Duannis and his mother,” wrote the congressman, who maintains a firm position against the Cuban regime and actively promotes sanctions and restrictions on him.

Diaz-Balart’s statements occur in a context of growing concern for the health status of Duannis León Taboada, who began his hunger strike on July 18 as a form of protest and in solidarity with other mothers of political prisoners. The young man, sentenced to 14 years of deprivation of liberty, has been a victim of cruel deals, isolation and beatings in prison.

His mother, Jenny Taboada, has faced police harassment and restrictions to see him. On July 21, when trying to access the prison, she was arrested under deception and transferred to a police station, where she was interrogated and threatened with “instigation to commit crime.” In recent statements to Cubanet Jenny said: “As a mother, I live clinging to God to continue giving me strength and not to collapse, and transmit them to my son too. But I am desperate. (…) My mind shouts and asks for help but my heart suffers. I feel tied from hands and feet. When a mother cannot run and save her son, she feels helpless. They do not allow me, they do not allow me to save my son. ”

Organizations such as the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights have warned about the delicate physical state of Duannis, who suffers from a previous kidney disease, and have asked that their life and physical integrity be guaranteed.
