The former mayor of São Bernardo do Campo (SP) Luiz Marinho took over today (3) as Minister of Labor and Employment. In a ceremony at the folder’s auditorium, at Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasília, he stated that he will do everything to ensure that the work agenda takes on unprecedented protagonism and is at the center of policy definitions in the country.
In a speech, Marinho mentioned the mission of contributing to transform Brazil into a developed country, with decent jobs, good wages, social, labor, trade union and social security protection for all. A country, according to him, where work will once again be a fundamental instrument to end hunger, overcome poverty and combat inequality.
“We are aware of the enormous difficulties we are going to face. But we are convinced that the will to change will bring together brave agents of transformation, capable of overcoming ills and difficulties of all kinds. It’s time to look forward and start promoting transformations,” he said.

The new minister recalled that the changes underway in the sector are extensive and profound and that the covid-19 pandemic has accelerated and expanded this process even further. New technologies, according to him, currently occupy all areas of the production system, such as telecommuting and the home office.
“We want and need to increase labor productivity to add value to our economy, generate income and wealth that allow us to promote the overcoming of misery and poverty, raise the standard of living and promote the well-being of all. Technology and productivity are constitutive themes of the world of work, strategic guidelines for the formulation of an innovative development agenda”, said Marinho.

For Marinho, the path to the necessary labor changes is to improve the economic environment. “It is through investment and innovation in industrial production, agriculture, commerce, services and third sector activities that we are going to create the conditions for the generation of new and good jobs and new forms of social, labor and social security protection. ”.
“I will act not only at the head of this ministry, but throughout the Esplanade, to ensure that the work and employment agenda is strongly incorporated into economic, technological and social development policies”, he said.

Also according to the minister, the portfolio’s work will be committed to valuing social dialogue and collective bargaining. “We understand that the interested parties, workers and businessmen, must have the autonomy to invest in a system of labor relations that values and encourages collective bargaining and the voluntary resolution of conflicts”.
“We will, in a short time, through tripartite dialogue and together with the National Congress, build a legislation that modernizes our union system and labor relations and that brings us closer to the best practices existing in the world at this moment”, he added.

Marinho recalled that the world of work carries what he called a perverse legacy of precariousness, vulnerability, informality and turnover that affects more than half of the country’s workforce, pointing to a structural debt to be overcome. “We will face the challenge of, with a thriving economy, improving the living and working conditions of this working population”, he said.
“Our mission is to create a system of labor, social and social security protection for the millions of Brazilian men and women who are not classic workers, such as self-employed workers, family farmers.”
