MIAMI, United States.- Mariela Castro, director of the National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX) of Cuba and daughter of dictator Raúl Castrodescribed this Wednesday as “terrible” the possibility that the voluntary interruption of pregnancy (abortion) ceases to be a right in the United States.
According to a note from the agency EFE newsCastro lamented during a press conference on the occasion of the Day to Fight Homophobia and Transphobia, “that this step back in terms of rights can be taken,” something he considered an “expression of misogyny.”
“Preventing women from being able to decide on their bodies, from being able to fully exercise their rights, is the continuation of that policy of historical misogyny from the exploitative patriarchy,” she said.
Mariela Castro assured that this means a setback in women’s rights and compared it to the “witch hunts” of the Middle Ages. According to the niece of the late dictator Fidel Castro, this possible revocation of the right to voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the United States could be linked to the advance of “retrograde” and “obscurantist” positions.
Likewise, he said that “fundamentalist positions” are managing to position themselves in various countries on issues such as abortion and sexual diversity, and are advancing proposals to remove those rights “that have been fought for”, taking women as “hostages”.
Mariela Castro’s statements come two days after the draft of an opinion was leaked in the United States during the debates inside the Supreme Court that would revoke the legal protection of abortion, included in the Constitution after the sentence of “Roe against Wade” from 1973.
For its part, after the leak of the document, the court affirmed that the text is authentic, but clarified that it is not a definitive decision.
