Maribel Gordon: ‘Panama is the sixth place with the worst distribution of wealth worldwide’

According to the specialist, neoliberalism has prevailed in Panama since 1979, but in the country free market structures are restricted, which is why economists call this “oligopolistic and monopolistic structures”, which is what is operating in sensitive sectors.

The economist, professor and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic for the free nomination, Maribel Gordón, stated that we are in a moment of crisis recognized by all.

He added that since before the pandemic, a new model of economic policy has been discussed, which is not the same as an economic system. “When that is unknown, there are two possibilities: a complete level of ignorance or a complete level of manipulating a concrete reality and favoring the minuscule interests of a group of businessmen who have been placed in the discussion or on the table,” he said.

According to the specialist, neoliberalism has prevailed in Panama since 1979, but in the country free market structures are restricted, which is why economists call this “oligopolistic and monopolistic structures”, which is what is operating in sensitive sectors.

“We have to work on happiness as a right and that is being denied to us as Panamanians. Panama is not a poor country, it is a country with wealth, with biodiversity, poorly distributed; we are in sixth place with the worst distribution of wealth at the world,” he concluded.
