MIami, Aug 27 (EFE). American singer Mariah Carey is “heartbroken” over the deaths of her mother and sister on the same day, she said in a statement published in the press in which she did not give details about the two deaths and asked that her privacy be respected.
“I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” Mariah Carey said in a statement announcing the deaths of her mother, Patricia, and older sister, Alison, last weekend.
“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother last weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the 55-year-old singer said.
The winner of five Grammy Awards and 15 Billboard Awards, among other honors, said in the statement that she was blessed to have spent time with her mother a week before she passed away.
In her memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” (2020), she confessed that her relationship with her mother was “complicated” because it was “full of contradictions and competing realities,” but she dedicated the book to her with the promise to always love her “as best as I can.”
According to media reports, the publication of the book strained relations with Alison, who even filed a lawsuit against the singer for the damage apparently caused by her bringing to light some family stories.
In addition to Alison, Mariah Carey has a brother, Morgan, also the son of Patricia Hickey, an Irish woman who was an opera singer and singing teacher, and Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American aeronautical engineer of Venezuelan descent. EFE
