Mariachi Eduardo Buendía: “Music has saved me, has given me everything in life” (interview)

Mariachi Eduardo Buendía: "Music has saved me, has given me everything in life" (interview)

Huancaíno Eduardo Buendía, Mariachi and a psychologist by profession, has been cultivating the music that fell in love since he was just a 5 -year -old boy. With its own style and a special connection with the public, it has just launched its new album “Songs for my daughter”, a production of ten songs that was recorded entirely in the city of Huancayo, seeks to transcend borders and demonstrate that Mariachi also has a place in this creative city of music and cradle of great prominent artists.

-Eduardo, tell us how your passion for mariachi was born

-In reality, this music has accompanied me all my life, since I was approximately 5 years old. It was like a love at first glance. They introduced me to Pedro Infante, Javier Solís, Vicente Fernández, I watched those films and dreamed: “Someday I’m going to be like them.” So I imagined my life, singing, introducing me, making music.

-What would you say that it is your personal seal on stage?

-Mi Plus is the love that I have to this music. I love Mariachi so much that I listen to it all day and I want to keep listening to it, as when one is in love. I think that is what I transmire into my presentations. In addition, each show is different, I like to interact with the public, talk, observe and choose the songs according to the moment. That closeness, that spontaneity, is what differentiates me.

-Do you think that Huancayo is a city that is opening Mariachis’s music in recent years?

-The Mariachi is an adopted music, but at the same time universal. I do not know Spanish -speaking country where there is no mariachi. That is commented a lot in international meetings. In our city there is space, and as UNESCO has defined, Huancayo is a music creative city. That does not cover only local genres, but also international such as rock, cumbia, sauce, and of course, mariachi. There is still much to know about this music, and in my career I try to break the stereotype that Mariachi is only for birthdays or parties. It is a versatile music, capable of competing with any professional genre. Little by little it is being achieved and I contribute with my grain of sand.

-You are launching a new musical project, what can you tell us about him?

-It is a new 10 -the -song album, perhaps the best work I have done in my whole life. It is titled “Songs for my daughter” and is inspired by my personal experience. Although the name sounds suggestive, it is not only for my daughter, but also for all daughters, mothers, families and people in general. It is not a children’s album, although it has songs with such an air, but it transmits a message that everyone can perceive.

-How long did you make this album produce?

-Acximously one year, between choosing songs, recording, making arrangements, mastering, producing videos and planning the launch. From this Friday (yesterday) the themes will be available on digital platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. I think I am one of the first mariachis in the region to upload a complete album to these platforms, which excites me a lot. In addition, everything was recorded in Huancayo, and that is something that fills me with pride. Music, production, audiovisuals, everything is local work. We use scenarios such as the city center, parks and boardwalks. I have already released three videos: “Alejandra”, “Muñequita Linda” and “Dibújame”, which tell a story together, although they can also be seen independently. The plot revolves around an artist father who, despite the shortcomings, struggles to give his daughter the best.

-What expectations do you have with this project?

-The next year I will present part of this album in international meetings in Guadalajara, Mexico, La Cuna del Mariachi. I will also do concerts here in Huancayo and I will continue to upload material to digital platforms during this year and next. My goal is that this project transcends borders.

-From your experience as a psychologist and artist, what value music has as a tool for life?

-The music has saved me. He has given me everything in life, he has taught me, he has accompanied me in the most difficult moments. It has allowed me to express emotions and sublimize many things. Thanks to music I have grown as a person and I have been able to connect with others. It will even be a bridge with my daughter: when it is no longer, she can remind me through these songs.

-Finally, where can we find your new production?

-They can find me in all social networks as “Eduardo Buendía.” “Songs for my daughter” is available in Spotify, Apple Music, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other platforms. The first three videos are already on YouTube, and the others will go up in the course of the year.
