Mexico City, Mexico.-Of Spanish descent, María Brañas was born on the distant fourth of March 1907 in San Francisco, United States. Which makes her not only a 116-year-old woman, but also the oldest person in the world.

Yesterday María turned another year old, surrounded by her family and they celebrated it at the Santa María del Tura geriatric residence, in Olot, a town in Catalonia, Spain.

His father was a journalist from Pamplona and his mother a Catalan housewife. When María was eight years old, her parents decided to return to Spain, but her father fell ill on the journey and later died.
