MIAMI, United States. — Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar denounced this Friday the Mexican government for hiring Cuban doctors, a fact that could violate clauses established in the Mexico-United States-Canada Treaty (T-MEC).
At a press conference held in Miami, the Cuban-American representative pointed out that the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) is involved in international human trafficking by using doctors from the island who are forced to be part of the so-called international missions. .
“If President AMLO ignores this call, he endangers a free trade agreement that is highly important for Mexicans. Losing the free trade agreement is going to be a problem for Mexico”, warned María Elvira in her speech.
The Republican congresswoman explained that the free trade agreement law is clear and penalizes those countries whose governments encourage human trafficking.
“If you don’t listen to our call, you jeopardize that treaty, because I’m not going to rest until President Biden’s administration complies with the law. And the free trade agreement law says that any country that negotiates with the United States cannot traffic in humans,” added María Elvira.
The congresswoman was accompanied at the press conference by Mexican deputy Mariana Gómez del Campo and Senator Julen Rementería del Puerto.
In April of this year, María Elvira Salazar addressed a letter to the Office of Trade and Labor Affairs of the US Department of Labor requesting an investigation into violations of the T-MEC by Mexico due to its use of medical personnel Cuban foreigner.
The letter echoed reports from international human rights organizations, which maintain that the Cuban regime steals the salaries of Cuban doctors and that they are forced to sign contracts against their will and their families are in danger of reprisals if they do not comply
