President José Jerí was eventually removed from office. With 75 votes in favor, 24 against and 3 abstentions, Parliament approved the motions of censure against the president in his capacity as head of the Congress.
With this result, José Jerí retires from office amid questions about the so-called ‘Chifagate’ case in which the then president met with Chinese businessmen informally in a chifa in the capital, in addition to a series of irregular hiring of young ladies in positions of trust after spending the night in the Government Palace.
After the extraordinary session of Congress, the parliamentarians presented four lists of candidates to succeed Jerí in office and govern the country for the time remaining until the next general elections, called for Sunday, April 12, and the subsequent inauguration on July 28.
The lists presented are led by the congressmen: Segundo Acuña, María del Carmen Alva, Edgard Reymundo and José Balcazar. The voting process for the new president will take place on Wednesday, February 18 at 6:00 pm strictly in person, so the attendance of all congressmen will be required.
After this new chapter of political crisis in our country, José Jerí becomes the eighth president to leave power in just 10 years.
