The Popular Action congresswoman Maria del Carmen Alva questioned that the president peter castle has resorted to the Organization of American States (OAS), an instance to which he requested to activate the Inter-American Democratic Charter to preserve the institutional framework in Peru.
Speaking to the press after the statement by Jose WilliamsAlva Prieto cataloged the request of the head of state to the OAS as a “drowned slap”.
“There are definitely a lot of things behind this letter. Yesterday the president was seen, at this press conference, very scared, worried, desperate with his cabinet behind him accompanying him. This Inter-American Democratic Charter exists, but we know that our country lives in a democracy and that this Congress respects the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure,” said the parliamentarian.
María del Carmen Alva affirmed that the invocation of the Democratic Charter “is part of a strategy” and hopes that the OAS commission that will visit Peru “is aware of and reviews everything.”
“I understand that it has been approved that a commission is going to come, we are going to receive them here in Congress, the Ombudsman, the Nation’s prosecutor, will receive it. Here the only thing that is wanted to cover up and hinder is all the investigations and 6 complaints that are in the Prosecutor’s Office, that is a corruption issue. That has to be clear not only for all Peruvians, but for all the countries that make up the international world. The OAS, when it is present here, will have all that information from us,” she indicated.
OAS supports the Government of Pedro Castillo
In a special session held this Thursday, the OAS Permanent Council approved by acclamation the draft resolution proposed by the Peruvian delegation.
It was agreed to “express their solidarity and support for the democratically elected Government of the Republic of Peru, as well as for the preservation of democratic institutions.”
