During the meeting this Thursday with Pedro Vaca, rapporteur for freedom of expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the president of Congress, Maria del Carmen Alva (Popular Action), reported that on May 31 journalists will be able to enter the facilities of the Legislative Palace.
The Parliament indicated that Alva Prieto gave Vaca this date during the dialogue of more than an hour that took place in the Grau room of Congress and that it was not broadcast on its official channel.
During the appointment, The head of the Legislature explained to the IACHR rapporteur that the representatives of the Office of Risk and Disaster Management of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima are already supervising the infrastructure of Congress with the purpose that the environments are safe and that there are no risks for journalists.
The meeting was also attended by the president of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Ernest Bustamante (Popular Force), and the head of the Justice and Human Rights Commission, Gladys Echaiz (APP).
Before leaving Parliament, Pedro Vaca toured, in the company of Maria del Carmen Alvathe environments of the Hall of the Lost Steps, the parliamentary chroniclers room that is being remodeled, and the chamber of sessions.
IACHR Rapporteur speaks out
After the meeting he held with representatives of the Legislature, the rapporteur for freedom of expression of the IACHR confirmed that the journalists would enter the facilities at the end of May. In addition, he said that he could not specify whether this entry would be to all the facilities, including the chamber, or to the office that will be used for the work of the press.
“I do not agree that this tent exists. I also stated that journalists find it humiliating to watch parliamentary activity from a screen. We hope that efforts will be made to open the hemicycle as soon as possible”, he added.
