The afternoon of last holiday Monday ended in tragedy in the El Tesoro Shopping Park, in the southeast of Medellín, after an elderly woman lost her life after suffering a fall on one of the complex’s escalators. The victim was identified as Maria Cristina Andrade Monje76 years old, who visited the shopping center in the company of his family.

According to witness accounts, the woman was moving between floors when, for reasons that have not yet been clarified, she lost her balance in the middle of the ascent. The fall caused a strong impact against the metal steps, which caused several injuries that initially appeared to be less serious.
After being helped by shopping center staff and paramedics who attended the emergency, Andrade was transferred to a care center for a more detailed evaluation. However, despite medical efforts, his health condition became more complicated due to the severity of the blows suffered during the accident.
Sources close to the case indicated that the older adult presented internal complications that were not evident at first, which would have contributed to her clinical deterioration in the hours after the fall. Finally, he died while receiving medical attention, causing shock among his loved ones and customers of the shopping center.
The El Tesoro Commercial Park regretted what happened and indicated that it activated the emergency protocols established for this type of situation. Likewise, he extended his condolences to the victim’s family and expressed his willingness to collaborate with the authorities in the process of verifying what happened.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, and called for reinforced precautionary measures when using escalators, especially for elderly people or people with reduced mobility. The death of María Cristina Andrade Monje leaves a painful reminder about the importance of assistance and accompaniment in spaces with risks of falls.
