MÉRIDA, Mexico – Opposition leader María Corina Machado reappeared Saturday before thousands of her followers at an opposition demonstration in Caracas.
Responding to the opposition’s call and despite threats from the government, thousands of Venezuelans mobilized throughout the country in what is a show of strength by the movement led by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.
“You are the heroes of this story. Every Venezuelan who did not give up, who knows that we won. Edmundo González is the president-elect and our Venezuelan flag is the symbol of freedom. Venezuela will be free very soon,” Machado, who is facing threats of imprisonment from the Maduro government, told the cheering crowd.

“The people are with us. We must be convinced that this is above us. It is a fight for the good, for human dignity. We are going with firmness, resilience, and confidence. We are united and we know what we have to do,” said the leader, at a demonstration where candidate Edmundo González was not present.
The opposition leader thanked the international community for its support and spoke out against Maduro’s legal actions.
“July 28 marks a milestone from which the transition to democracy began in Venezuela. We continue to move forward, we are united, we know what we have to do and we are doing it well,” he said.
“We do not promote violence. Going out to protest civilly and peacefully is not violence. We are not going to give up our right to civic protest. We do not fall for provocations, we do not attack, ours is a fight that transcends the political, we have already won the electoral process, now a new stage is coming,” he added.
Large mobilizations have been reported in other Venezuelan states.
In San Cristobal, Táchira, for example, Bolivarian National Guardsmen expressed their support for the protesters, as reported in a video released by journalist Orlando Avendaño.
During the day, the Venezuelan diaspora also took to the streets in several cities around the world.
Chavismo has responded to the opposition mobilization with a rally of motorcyclists who toured the streets of the capital.
