MÉRIDA, Mexico -. María Corina Machado said this Sunday that she will remain in Venezuela and that the Edmundo Gonzalez leaves the country It is due to the need to preserve one’s life.

“His life was in danger, and the increasing threats, summons, arrest warrants and even attempts at blackmail and coercion to which he has been subjected, demonstrate that the regime has no scruples or limits in its obsession with silencing him and trying to subdue him. Faced with this brutal reality, it is necessary for our cause to preserve his freedom, his integrity and his life,” said Machado in a message addressed to Venezuelans in X.

María Corina considers the regime’s repression against González “further evidence of its criminal nature, which delegitimizes and undermines them, every day more.”

“But, once again, they were wrong. Their attempted coup against Popular Sovereignty will not come to fruition,” he said.

The opposition leader said that González will be “sworn in as Constitutional President of Venezuela and Commander in Chief of the National Armed Forces” on January 10.

“Let this be very clear to everyone: Edmundo will fight from outside alongside our diaspora and I will continue to do so here, alongside you,” he concluded.

Edmundo González leaves for exile

Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González left Venezuela on Saturday night for Spain after receiving political asylum.

“Edmundo González, at his own request, is flying to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane. The Government of Spain is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans,” wrote Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares in X.

González, criminalized by the Maduro regime whom, according to all evidence, he defeated resoundingly in the elections of July 28, had held a meeting on Saturday morning with Spanish diplomats, according to The Countryafter negotiations that have lasted for two weeks.

The vice president of the Chavista regime, Delcy Rodríguez, announced González’s departure on Instagram.

“Venezuela has granted the necessary safe-conducts in the interest of the tranquility and political peace of the country. This conduct reaffirms the respect for the Law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community,” he said.

Dutch authorities revealed on Sunday that Gonzalez spent a month in their embassy in Caracas before requesting asylum.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said in a letter to his country’s parliament that he had agreed to host Gonzalez the day after the election, “for as long as necessary,” at the embassy in Caracas.

Arrest warrant against him

An arrest warrant against Gonzalez was issued last Monday, September 2, by the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office, for not having responded to three summons to testify about the website where the opposition published detailed results of the elections of July 28.

According to the order, signed by prosecutor Luis Ernesto Duéñez, González was accused of “usurpation of functions,” alleged crimes of forging public documents, instigation to disobedience of the law, criminal association, sabotage to damage systems and conspiracy.

According to the Chavista regime, Maduro obtained 51.95% of the votes in the elections, while Edmundo García only obtained 43.18%.

The opposition, which has managed to gather 81% of the voting records, currently public on its website for review by citizens and independent bodies, claims that García easily surpassed Maduro by almost 40% of the votes.
