Concluded the sympathy consultation process carried out this Sunday by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) to choose their presidential candidate, the senior leaders and candidates for the position were summoned to the organization’s national headquarters to announce the winner and give a message of unity. But one of the candidates did not attend.
Margarita Cedeno was the great absentee of the invited pre-candidates. In the Bienvenido Sandoval room of the Casa Nacional Reinaldo Pared Pérez they met, after accepting her defeat, Karen Ricardo, Maritza Hernandez, Francisco Dominguez Brito and the winner of the contest, Abel Martinez.
Everyone, including the president of the party and former president of the Republic, Danilo Medina, raised the hand of the official winner of the Public consultationas a message of unity and commitment of the organization in the face of the next electoral contest in the country.
Before the consultation on the Candidates for the Presidential Candidacy of the Dominican Liberation Party, all they signed a document in which they promised to respect the results and to support whoever was elected from the process.
Hours before the PLD celebration, Cedeño issued a statement on his social networks in which recognized Martínez’s victory and congratulated him for having “been favored with the votes on this day”, but did not attend the event, despite the call of the party leadership.
During his speech, after being proclaimed the winner of the consultation, Abel Martínez, current mayor of Santiago, said that Cedeño had called him personally to express his congratulations. He thanked her and the other candidates for the victory obtained. She also said that the victory did not belong to him, but to all the applicants, whom she thanked.
Abel’s Words
“And I want to make a stop to thank from the depths of my being, from my feelings as a Dominican, as a PLD supporter, to the applicants who were in this process and who today we ended embracing, who today we culminate this first stage with the faith put in the future, with the firm decision that in 2024 the PLD return to power,” he proclaimed.
The numbers
According to bulletin six of the Organizing Commission of the Consultation on Candidates for the Presidential Candidacy (Conap), the former vice president was in third place in the contest, achieving 57,024 votes for a percentage of 16.23%. Martínez won with 213,185 for 60.68% and the second place went to Francisco Domínguez Brito, who got 73,137 votes (20.82%).
