Shortly before the start of the vote, Senator Marcos do Val (Somos-ES) removed his candidacy for the Senate presidency. In his speech as a candidate, the parliamentarian said he was the target of censorship by the Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes with the connivance of the current board of directors of the house.
In his speech, Val defended democracy and criticized what he called unconstitutional measures that hurt parliamentary rights guaranteed by the Constitution, citing blocked social networks, embargoed wages, the suspension of his diplomatic passport and fines.
“I close, making it clear to everyone that I prefer to be a lone fighter than a coward in the crowd,” he said. “I want to officialize here the withdrawal of my candidacy because I was harmed by censorship reasons. Only yesterday the press found that I existed as a candidate. I did not, democratically, a candidate. So I’m withdrawing because the possibility of an election was unfeasible. ”
Senator Soraya Thronicke (Somos-MS), the only woman in the dispute, also removed the candidacy. In her speech, she defended a Senate that “look at female reality”, citing employment, income, entrepreneurship, protection at home and on the streets. “Brazil needs to advance on this agenda. Brazil is behind Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia. ”
Another point cited as “crucial and delicate” by Soraya deals with the independence of powers. If we do not have an independent and harmonious relationship between the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary, according to the Constitution, we will never be respected. The delicate moment we live in is not just one power. He threatens the state as a whole. ”
“Divergences are part of democracy. Marking position is also part of democracy. But the Senate institution needs to be above each of us, each individual here. And it was thinking about it that, after much reflection and dialogue with the leaders, I humbly decided to renounce my candidacy. Because I am able to recognize the current scenario. I am able to recognize the possible scenario. ”
“This is not a withdrawal, but strategy. Alone, without much of the press, I could not realize the changes I defend, but joined with other leaders who share these ideas, we can build a stronger, more respectable and representative Senate, ”he concluded.
