March of Silence brings together a crowd that demands truth and justice

The 27th March of Silence advances slowly through the Cordón and Centro neighborhoods of Montevideo. On time, the crowd left at 7:00 p.m. from Jackson and Rivera (Cordón), like every year, in Montevideo. The call for Relatives of disappeared detainees calls for truth and justice.

This year’s motto is: “Where are they? The truth is still kidnapped, it is the responsibility of the State”. A poster with the slogan gives way to the march that advances through the streets of Montevideo.

The colective images of silence it was proposed to deliver this year, 22 thousand photographs of the 197 missing during the military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973-1985). In parallel, the participants were invited to enter the Familiares website and download one of the copies.

In Cagancha square, the National Anthem will be sung, and will be read aloud, the name of each of the disappeared.

The march is organized by Mothers and Relatives of Uruguayans Detained and Disappearedevery May 20th. There were also calls in all departments of the country, even abroad, in countries such as France, Argentina, Spain and England.

In 2022, the traditional march is once again face-to-faceafter a virtual intervention was carried out in 2021, as a consequence of the spread of coronavirus cases that existed then.

In 2020 it was similar. Virtually, the relatives of detainees and disappeared during the dictatorship (1973-1985) said “present” and demanded to know where they are and what happened to each of the victims of State terrorism.

In a symbolic way, 18 de Julio was intervened with the footprints painted white on the pavement. As requested by the organization, the passing of the truck with the faces of each of the disappeared was silent and without an audience.

Throughout the day, several places in the country were intervened, such as flowerbeds, murals, private balconies, public places.

On the occasion of the March of Silence there are modifications this Friday in traffic in the Cordón neighborhood, and Centro. Jackson streets between Rodó and Rivera, as well as Guayabos between Jackson and J. Rodríguez remain closed due to the start of the march.

Lines 104, 117, 128 and 199 that usually run there will take their routes through Jackson, JE Rodó, Pablo de María, Colonia. While lines 141, 144 and 427 will take their routes through Av. Rivera, Fernández Crespo or Pablo de María, Colonia, Río Negro.

As long as the march takes place, 18 de Julio Avenue will see its usual circulation modified in both directions between Fernández Crespo and Plaza Cagancha.

  • The lines towards the Center from the Av. 8 de Octubre corridor will take Av. 18 de Julio, Pablo de María, Colonia, Julio H. and Obes, Av. 18 de Julio, to their routes.
  • The lines towards the Center from the Av. Italia corridor will circulate through Acevedo Díaz, Colonia, Río Negro, to their routes.
  • Outbound lines will take Av. 18 de Julio, Río Negro, San José, Barrios Amorín, Constituent, JE Rodó, Pablo de María, Av. de 18 de Julio, to their routes.
